I was thinking of this yesterday since I'm flying out of town tomorrow... then the news of the AirFrance jet didn't really help me! Also, if you have any tips or tricks for making flying easier/better/more fun, let us know!
So do you have a fear of flying?
PPQ
I have a fear of flying, I am like B. A. Barracus on the A-team you had better knock me the F out if you want me to get on there. I havent flown in......15 years......
PLUS i get airsick, I am talking green around the Gills sick.
1Not really...I don't particularly like it and I get nervous when there's turbulence or a rough take-off/landing...but not to the point of a panic attack or anything like that.
And regardless, a few bloody marys before a flight definitely takes the edge off!
The last flight I was on was full of male flight attendants and I swear they were practicing their comedy routine. When we landed, one of them got on the speaker and mimicked the sound of squealing breaks as soon as we hit the ground.
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
While I thought it was hilarious, the couple next to us did not.
2I love having funny flight attendants!!
I flew to VT last winter and the crew was all from Florida and they were doing the whole "The weather in Burlington is cloudy and 27 degrees" then they did the safety brief and got the floatation device part and the stewardess was like "well, if HAD a water landing, I'm pretty sure it would be frozen so... "
3They were totally goofy. It didn't help that our flight was full of high school cheerleaders coming back from a championship competition AND college girls coming back from a softball tournament! (btw that's also what I had to deal with while in Disneyland.
)
One of them said the other was a cousin of the Jonas brothers and the entire plane squealed.
4hahah!!
I just love when they make jokes to cut the tension.
I wouldn't say I'm afraid of flying, but I DON'T love it. But I love travel so I have to suck it up. Generally I prefer to drive everywhere I go, I'll even drive 18+ hours in avoidance of a flight, but until they build a bridge to Europe I'm kind of stuck flying sometimes. I just prefer to drive to be in control (no weather delays, cleaning delays, mechanical delays, lost luggage) and with gas prices sometimes its cheaper even on the long trips. Plus you have your car there and you can leave whenever you want!
I really don't like flying alone. I like to have someone's hand to hold.
5I have a love/hate relationship with flying. Like sarah, I hate turbulence and rough take off/landings. I had a landing one time, where I swear, the pilot just dropped the plane. Everyone on the plane let out a yelp when we landed and my back/butt was sore the next day.
I also hate when the flight attendants are jerks. I inevitable get at least one on a flight who would rather gossip with the other attendants instead of their job. When you request anything they act like you are completely ruining their flight.
Oh, and I also hate it when I get stuck next to someone who runs their mouth non-stop. But that's more of a personal issue than the airline's fault.
6*inevitably
7No I'm used to it but I hate being next to annoying people who either talk to much or have annoying kids who likes to kick my seat

8Life is short. Enjoy it while you can.
I flew a lot when I was little, but in the past year or so I think it has mentally sunk in, like, what's actually happening when you're in the plane: that you're really freaking high going really freaking fast. And I've kind of freaked myself out overthinking it.
Of course, this adult-onset fear of flying has also luckily kicked in during a time in my life when I'm flying more frequently than ever. Yay...
9I always hated to fly until one night when I was going out of town on a long term assignment and my friends gave me a party... at my house. I didn't get to sleep until four and got up an hour later feeling hung over and ...whatever. A hot shower didn't help, but someone took me to the airport so I could leave my car at home.
10When I got on the plane, my natural fear came back to me...but I was so incredibly tired that I just told myself I didn't care. We took off and my natural fearful feelings kept trying to take hold and I kept telling myself that I was too tired to care. That was the first time I was able to sleep on a plane. After that, I just looked at them as necessary evils, especially the military planes which can be rough.
I don't think I would recommend that method to anyone else, but it was effective.
I've only been on a plane twice (in 2006 - to and from DC) and I enjoyed it. I was nervous, but it was fun - Josh even let me have the window seat! lol
No wait, I've been on a plane three times. When I was 16 I attended a "NASA" camp of sorts and we had one of those really small Cessna planes (I think?) and we went up in groups of 3 with the pilot. I got to be in the co-pilot seat and he even let me pilot the plane by myself for a while when we were in the air (he sat back and let me "man" the plane!). He even let me help with the landing. That was really exciting - especially at 16!!
11I have never really had issues with flying. I fly often enough now that I really don't even give it a second thought.
12And were you ladies on Southwest when you had the funny flight attendants? I used to fly Southwest a lot, but I don't any more. But they are notorious for having funny flight attendants.
13Yup, Southwest. They must encourage it during training.
14i hate flying, but not because i'm afraid. because i'm always stuck next to bratty kids or whatever. plus i barely ever fly within north america, so i'm always on those loooooooong transcontinental flights. i get bored. and i have long legs, so i am sooo uncomfortable!
but, like haus said, i love to travel, so it's just something i put up with
15No, I love it. I love everything about flying, not even the TSA controls with the smell of feet all over the room, the overpriced food at the airports, or the fact that I can't bring make up in my handbag ruins the experience for me
