So I suck at making smoothies. But in the heat, I find myself craving them. My smoothies never come out sweet enough. I usually make them with plain yogurt, skim milk and frozen fruit. Sometimes I try honey to sweeten, but it doesn't seem to work...
Does anyone have any smoothie tricks of the trade? Or good flavor combos?
PPQ
I love smoothies!
Try using fruit juice instead of milk. My mother made me smoothies almost every day of my young life. She used crushed ice, fruit juice of your choice, and bananas. It gives it that creamy texture.
We actually never put dairy in our smoothies.
1If you wanted to keep the dairy in it, I would suggest leaving the yogurt, but still replacing the milk with fruit juice.
2hmm interesting! im all about the yogurt though for the protein and the vitamins...
were these smooties in your vegan days?? i love that thanksgiving turkey was what it took to turn the tide!
3haha, read my mind.
4Oh yeah once I had turkey I was furious with my mom. Then I had REAL chocolate. Up until then we had only had carab yuk!
5One word: buttermilk.
Seriously.
Put in some frozen fruit or fresh fruit, buttermilk, ice, and some honey and you will have a thick and creamy smoothie.
The juice idea is also good too since it's already sweetened.
6Ugh when I was a kid my hippie parents gave me carab too. Gah!!
7It would make it infinitely less healthy, but milkshake base does the trick! It's basically unflavored ice cream.
8Yogurt, frozen fruit, & fruit juice. (sometimes I use soft soy instead of yogurt)
I peel and freeze bananas just before as they reach that ripe stage when most people eat them. I can't eat them unless they are a tiny bit on the green stage or after they have been frozen or I have a allergic reaction.
My blender sucks so ice just makes them icky and not smooth...so I just use frozen fruit. I have a guava, nectarine, apricot, fig, persimmon, asian pear and two types of plums trees and every summer I have WAY too much fruit so I freeze it or can it.
BTW...cooked and whipped apricots with black pepper and a dash of rum is a killer sauce to use on chicken. Heck...eat it with your smoothie.
9I used to work in a juice bar back in the day. We used frozen fruit (but fresh bananas) and fruit juice. If someone wanted it dairy/soy based, we'd have to add honey or other natural sweeteners.
I like using frozen fruit because it's typically cheaper and your smoothies don't get all watered down like they can when using ice.
I sound like such a snob! haha
10Great tips ladies! I will check the out!
11I use frozen yogurt and mix which ever frozen berries I have in the freezer. But I don't like bananas in my smoothies and so it is hard to get the consistency right. I never use milk. there are some good recipes here http://www.favoritebrandrecipes.com/finder/searchlists/325.htm they give you the recipes for brand name mixes and they usually turn out pretty good.
12Now time for me to have a frozen margarita.
