I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what I can do for what I think is heartburn or acid reflux. I am 24 weeks pregant and I have never had either of these things, but lately I feel this burning sensation that is like (TMI warning) when you puke in your mouth a bit. I can't really take anything for it because of the baby, but I am willing to try anything diet, yoga, or any other natural method.
Help me please!
PPQ
Chewing gum after eating really helped me when I had a heartburn problem.
1Don't eat after too late. When you lie down make sure you have two pillows.
2When I was preggers I had this same problem. My doctor told me to take Tums (it is safe for the baby). I did and it worked like a charm.
Also, it may sound weird, but milk helps to neutralize stomach acids (so I have heard)- you could try drinking a small glass of milk whenever you eat. Maybe it will help?
3I have tried the not eating too late. I actually don't have much of an appetite so that is not too much of a problem with me.
It is weird things that set me off, like dairy, and I get it during the day not really at night.
Thanks for the help girls. I am going to try all of these suggestions.
4Oh. Yeah my hubby gets it at night. That's why I know the nighttime "remedies"
5Ice cream sometimes gives me heartburn. It is strange.
6avoid caffeine, & chocolate, some believe to avoid peppermint as well. eat slowly and small meals, make sure you are sitting upright (not slouching) and no bending at the waist.
if at night - what Sy suggested or sleeping on your left side
7I am only suppose to sleep on my left side, but I keep waking up on my back. I am definitely going to try the two pillow trick.
8I've heard papaya helps? Not sure why/how I know that...
9Ginger is a natural remedy for nausea and upset tummy. I used to keep Gingersnap cookies in a ziplock in my pocket to nibble on between patients. It helped me tremendously. Sometimes all it takes is a nibble.
I love crystallized ginger bits. Trader Joes has a ginger-chew that is great. The whole thing is too spicy for me so I a nibbler. ....side note...those ginger chews are FAB when you have a sore throat!
Ginger-ale helps with nausea too. I found it was better when room temp. Cold liquids can actually make your stomach contract and spasm...which is why when you go for your ultrasound if you drink your clear liquid for the test at room temp or even warmer, you can almost cut the amount in half. Your body processes warm/room temp liquids faster.
We hate to tell people that little piece of inside inside information because IF you are already a little dehydrated and IF you think can get away with drinking half of the water right before the test....it does not work.
Calm tummy + not already dehydrated = less fluid needed to get a full bladder for the ultrasound.
Tums is excellent...high source of calcium.
Gingersnap cookies with molasses is very high in iron.
The prenatal vitamins you get at GNC are easier on your tummy than most other brands.
When I was prego smells got me more than anything. I carried a vicks inhaler in my pocket to combat icky smells.
10Tell hubby to sleep against you to prevent the roll over- its the least he can do.
Papaya and Pineapple have bromelain which aids in digestion.
11I lived on all thing ginger in my first trimester. I ate it, drank it, basically consumed it every way I could. I had to stop consuming it because I just could not look at it anymore, but maybe I should try it again.
I have dehydration problems, I have to drink 70 FL oz a day because I wound up in the hospital a few weeks ago because of dehydration.
I just broke out my big bottle of tums and started to snack on them. I hope that helps.
12I love papaya and pineapple so I am going to get some of that today. Although the last time I had papaya (which used to be my favorite I gagged)
I eat an orange a day because that is one of the only things I enjoy eating, do you think I should cut that out?
13Good luck with the tums, Cine!
I hope you can find something that gives you some relief!
14Oh and Sam, my hubby would love to sleep next to me cuddling me, but I hate being touched while I sleep. He gives off way too much heat and snores in my ear.
15Thanks Martini!
16Cine, have you tried one of those long body pillows? Sleep with that behind you, it may help you not to roll over on your back....
17You know you might be consuming too much fluid at one time and you are getting it back. Try spreading it out more and not just with meals.
18The fluid thing was my first thought. I have to drink so much damn water it is like it is my job.
Martini, I am going to get one of the body pillows next month, I don't sleep much as it is, and I am really hoping it will help with my comfort.
19Oh and when it comes to the snoring, he has the breath right strips that help, but what helps more is me elbowing him in the ribs when he gets to loud and telling him to roll over.
20maybe consider getting a wedge pillow?
the body pillows are awesome but if you have a queen bed + hubby + belly it could get kinda tight
21ahhh the elbow in the ribs method - most effective
22What is a wedge pillow? Where can I find them?

24Am I crazy but didn't you just have a baby Cine?? Or was that someone else. I had HB soooo bad when I was last pregnant. I tried to eat a lot of bread (carried crackers religiously) and drank milk. If it got too bad i would take mylanta or pepto bismol. Tums never really worked for me. And then when I was delivery room, my HB was so bad I was nearly throwing up. They gave me prilosec and then nexium. Ask your dr, they may be ok to take as long as you don't have any underlying problems.
25Nope. This is my first baby. I am due New Years Eve.
That is what I am dealing with Hain, I constantly feel like I am going to barf, it is not painful per se, just this constant pukey feeling I have.
26There is something very creepy about listening to Barry Goldwater talkig about his pregnancy.
27
28Well...you are getting close the the point where most of the nausea will pass....usually by 35 weeks.
High acidic foods do increase the HB but TUMS will be your best friend. I can't handle the fruit ones...but LOVE the chocolate/cream ones.
Totally get that snoring thing. My husband has to use a C-Pap breathing machine at night and if the face thingie gets crooked it sounds like I am sleeping with a really bad bassoon player. Without it he quits breathing so I feel like I have to stay away and poke him..."Hey breathe man!"
We do this cuddle thing until one of says "Ok...time to put your mask on" and never realized how funny that was until I just typed it. (Dude I love you but put that mask on)
29Aww, congrats cine on the baby. Good Luck with the HB like I said mine didn't get better until after I delivered. But if i were you I would call your dr because If you are far enough along, most meds should be fine and benefits outweigh the risks.
30Congrats on the baby.
Id stay away from any highly acidic foods. Like some of the other ladies said, use Tums. I used so many of those in my first pregnancy, that I should have bought stock in the company. Cold milk helped me as well.
Don't use the ones with calcium. I know a woman who used Tums w/ calcium while pregnant and she ended up having calcium deposits.
31Congrats Cine! I didn't know you were pregnant.
One thing that helps my friend (he has bad heartburn sometimes) is drinking a glass of water with a teaspoon of baking powder in it. The baking powder helps to neutralize the acid. I don't know for sure if it is safe while pregnant, but I don't see why it wouldn't be considering tums are safe.
32Hope you get some relief soon!
I had heartburn my entire pregnancy. Tums is the only thing that helped and I took a lot of them. The good thing about them though is that they have calcium in them. And the body pillow thing was a waste of money for me. I used a regular pillow to wedge under the belly for comfort so that target one that Haus recommended looks really good for that purpose.
Congrats, Cine!
33Try ginger and blackberry tea. It'll do wonders for you
