Hey Everyone!
My husband is giving a recital in a couple weeks and I would like to put together a little reception for afterward. After his last recital we had everyone over to our place for homemade cheesecake and coffee.
This time I plan on having the reception at school where his recital will be as they have a reception room.
Would any of you kindly throw some suggestions my way on what I might consider serving? I was thinking cupcakes, but perhaps that is too, I dunno, boring/overdone? I guess I'm thinking more along the lines of dessert - but if you have other ideas, I'm open to them.
I'd also love suggestions for beverages.
Thanks so much for your help!

cupcakes are very trendy right now, get an nice assortment and you will be fine. The bakery could even put little musical notes on them.
1What time of day is it Amy? Do you think people will be hungry for more than dessert?
2Cupcakes are good. Or you could do mini cheesecakes...
3When I'm at receptions I love it when there's non-committal food, i.e. I can take a bite or two but don't have to commit to a whole slice and/or a whole cupcake.
I recently made some coconut macaroons from a recipe on the back of the shredded coconut package that was so so easy and tasted amazing. Best part is their pretty tiny and bite size. (http://allrecipes.com/recipe/bakers-one-bowl-coconut-macaroons/detail.as...)
You could also make some fudge. If you make cupcakes you could do the mini ones.
Also maybe some fresh fruit?
4I think his recital is around 7 or 7:30 - so around 8:30 or 9 pm... pretty late.
cupcakes.. mini cheesecakes and macaroons all sound really good!
I appreciate the suggestions so much!
5CAKE BALLS!!!
6I like cake balls, but the are such a pain in the ass to make.
7I know.
8Russian tea cakes/mexican wedding cakes! Yum! Easy to make too.
9I like the cupcake idea.
Never bored by cupcakes
10What kind of music is he playing? Could you maybe tie in the theme with that?
11ie. Mozart = something austrian
12Ha, that's very creative of you Haus! He's playing some very contrasting pieces. A double bass duet by Bottesini, a quintet by Dvořák, and duet with cello by somebody else.... Not sure how to tie in the Czech / Italian themes!
13hmm.. well you could get some candies like the Baci candy from Italy, that people can grab and go with. You could get some mini cannolis, usually the grocery stores have them now.
Czech is tougher! Through a quick search I found these: http://easteuropeanfood.about.com/od/bohemianczechdesserts/r/czechcookie...
that should be good because you can cut it into really small squares.
14Meatballs! Sorry...I know that's not desert. I just want some.
15I love cannoli. If you lived here I'd urge you to pick it up from Vaccaros in Baltimore. Oh my goodness.
16I have secret crushes on you all!
I'm loving the mini cannolis idea. And the Baci candy. I'd love to try the cake balls, but don't think I'll have the time to give those a shot - although since the tea cakes seem like they'd be practical, I might consider those too!
I'll say it again, Thanks so much for your input!
17Cake balls are timely to make... maybe another time.
What about some dips? Like a ranch or spinach dip. I could give you my recipe for Mississippi Sin which is a to-die-for dip. Or a block of cream cheese with some pepper jelly. Then just spread out some crackers. But that's if you want to get away from the dessers.
18And by timely I mean time consuming. Oy.
19They really are Star. I always get volunteered/volunteer myself (I'm the cake ball master round these parts) to make them. So I do....and I end up making cake balls till 2am the night before the party! Ugh. But they're so good.
20I made Pioneer Woman's mini Apple Dumplings at my last party Amy and they were a huge hit.
21Apple Dumplings?!
I've never had one of those! And oddly enough, I used to always watch "The Apple Dumpling Gang" when I was a youngster! On laserdisc!
22The jawdrop guy should not look so disgusted. He should be dropping his jaw due to pure desire of apple dumplings.
23I'm not generally a huge fan of sweets, so I'd rather see savory appetizers, but that's just me and my own palette. If you do do cupcakes or desserts I'd also rather have mini versions. Some cup cakes are kind of big!
If it were me, I'd get mini cupcakes and one of those giant boxes of frozen apps (mini quiches, etc) from Costco. And then just coffee and maybe hot cocoa.
24Cupcakes are always a hit.You could do a variety of mini tarts or brownie bites.
25Hot cocoa! Love that idea! Maybe I'll do hot cocoa and hot apple cider.
Now I"m starting to get excited!
26Ohh, you could do a hot cocoa/apple cider/coffee bar. With marshmallows, whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, etc, etc. That would be so much fun!
27That's an AWESOME idea, tiff! I think I'll do that!
